It's that time of the year when we look back at what we have accomplished, reward ourselves and set out to conquer new peaks.
It's easy to give in to the enthusiasm of setting goals and New Year's resolutions. The hard part is following through.
Here is the secret, you cannot motivate yourself to success nor can you use your willpower. Sooner or later they will both weaken. What you need is better habits.
"Motivation is what gets you started, habit is what keeps you going."
Right after you write your resolutions (on paper) ask yourself this question: "What are the habits that I need to develop in order to achieve my goals?"
They could be:
- getting up starting work earlier
- writing 1,000 words every day
- eating healthier food
- exercising more
...or anything else you can think of.
Now here is the hard part. Select one or two of those activities and do them 66 days in a row. This is what it usually takes for a new habit to kick in. It will be hard, no doubt about it, but here is where you should use your willpower.
The reward is totally worth it. When those 66 days are over you will be eating healthier, writing more, exercising more all out of habit. You will even feel worse if you don't do those things.
That's how you succeed on autopilot.
